Cator Sparks Bio

Growing up in the South Cator began traveling at an early age. He learned to parlez la langue française in Paris, to flamenco in Madrid, to dress in London and found his inner F. Scott in India. Amidst this divine debauchery, Cator attended the College of Charleston for two years and wrote for the Cougar Pause, which doubled its readership when Cator's quill hit the pad.

Cator gave Paris a shot for a semester and all was a fiasco save his nights at La Palace's VIP room or at the scandalous Follies Pigalle. The next stop on Cator's grand tour of life was London. Cator morphed from a rave 'til dawn club kid to the gentleman his mother dreamed he would become. During his metamorphosis, Cator learned the art of Fashion Journalism and how to write freely and express himself in a whole new genre. He was truly in his element.

Upon his arrival back in Atlanta, Cator began to wilt, so he bid Atlanta adieu. 1999 was a pivotal year; His boss at the time the divine Jeffrey Kalinsky offered him a job at his new pioneering store in the blood stained Meatpacking District. Cator knew this was his golden ticket.

Moving up to NYC with Jeffrey was a real eye opening experience. August 29, 1999, Jeffrey opened and the neighborhood began to morph.

Cator left the retail world after six months and began his PR career in the offices of Kevin Krier and Associates and later Fournier Communications and BPMW. After a magical trip to India where he met his mentor and realized his dream of being a journalist would only be realized if he took the first step. Upon return he went part time, started pitching and, thanks to all the editors he met through his PR career, his freelance career began. 

Currently Mr. Sparks is the EIC of TheManual.com, and has written for 1stdibs.com, Elle Décor, The New York Times, Acne Paper, Details,Style.com and VanityFair.com. He also has a column on The Huffington Post.


Cator has no problem tackling a good fashion story or event since he is out and about nearly every night whether it be the Frick Ball uptown or a Visionaire party downtown. Cator has been featured for his own dandified style in Ike Ude’s Style File, The Daily Telegraph, Stylelikeu.com and in Bill Cunningham’s section of The New York Times, Evening Hours. 


Cator lives in a townhouse in Harlem where he has been Block President for five years running. Recently Cator was commissioned a Colonel of Kentucky by Governor Steven L. Beshear and has requested all friends and family call him ‘Colonel Cator’ from now on.
